Waterproofing Shoes and Boots
Here in western Oregon, yearly rainfall totals can reach 50″+. We talk to people every day who are concerned about keeping their feet dry. There are different levels of protecting your leather shoes/ boots. A gentleman who steps outside the office for lunch is less concerned about the issue than a woman working with search and rescue.
AROUND TOWN/ LIGHT DUTY… A great water and stain protector that is very effective on its own, as well as a first coat in a more intensive, multi-level system, is Cadillac Shield Rain and Stain Protector. Just spray it on, let set for an hour, then give it a second coat. Then wait an hour before you wear them and you’re good to go. Or you can add Meltonian shoe polish, mink oil, or whatever else you like for more protection.
EXTREME WEATHER… On smooth leathers, we apply several coats of Cadillac Protector. Second step is two coats of Angelus Mink Oil Paste, when properly applied, is the longest lasting watrproofing compound I have found
SUEDE AND NUBUCK… We only use one product on these items, Cadillac Shield Rain and Stain Protector. It’s a great product for these items, we’ve never had a problem with it changing the color or texture of leather. Always bear in mind that these finer leather items are not meant for heavy weather use.
