Which Sole Should You Choose When Resoling Your Blundstones?

When it’s time to resole your Blundstone boots, choosing the right replacement sole makes all the difference in comfort, longevity, and appearance. At our shop, we’ve been repairing and resoling Blundstones for decades, and several Vibram sole styles have become customer favorites. Here’s a breakdown of the most popular options and why you might choose each one.

Vibram 1705 Lug Sole (Most Popular / Closest to Original)

We began using the Vibram 1705 lug sole on Blundstones around 1998, and it quickly became our most in-demand option. We’ve resoled thousands of Blundstone boots with this sole.

Why customers love it:

  • The 1705 closely resembles the original Blundstone sole profile

  • Excellent traction and durability

  • Many customers say it’s more comfortable than the original soles

  • Works well for both men’s and women’s Blundstone models

If you want the classic Blundstone look and feel, the 1705 is the top choice.

Vibram 1716 Smooth Sole (Dressy / Low-Profile Option)

Around 2000, an equestrian customer asked for a smooth sole that wouldn’t catch on stirrups. That request led us to begin using the Vibram 1716, and we’ve been offering it ever since.

Why choose the 1716:

  • Smooth bottom for riding, shop floors, or environments where lugs aren’t ideal

  • A more dressy, refined appearance

  • Great option for smaller men’s and women’s Blundstones

We don’t recommend the 1716 for larger sizes, as the thinner profile isn’t ideal for heavier wear. Still, we’ve resoled hundreds of boots with this sole and it continues to be a customer favorite for a smoother look.

Vibram 1752 Sole (Thicker / Cushioned / Business Look)

If you want a thicker, smoother  profile sole, the Vibram 1752 is an excellent upgrade.

Why choose the 1752:

  • Noticeably thicker sole with great comfort

  • Smooth profile gives a clean, business-casual appearance

  • Ideal for people working in muddy or wet environments—no lugs to collect mud

This is a fantastic choice if you want extra comfort or a different look than the classic Blundstone lug.

Custom Blundstone Sole Options

For customers wanting a unique or specialized look, we also offer custom resoling options:

  • Vibram 1758

  • Vibram 4014 (available in black or natural/off-white)

These create a more customized profile without compromising comfort.

    What we don’t recommend:
We don’t use hard Vibram compounds like the 132, 1136, or 100 series for Blundstone boot repairs. These soles are excellent for heavy work boots but don’t pair well with Blundstone uppers and don’t flex correctly.
